Invisible Investigator: Operational Security and IP Awareness in Modern Investigations
In an era where criminals are increasingly tech savvy, a detective’s greatest liability can be their own digital exhaust. This 90-minute intensive webinar goes beyond basic internet safety to provide law enforcement officers with a tactical understanding of Operational Security (OPSEC) in the digital realm. Many investigators unknowingly compromise their cases—and their safety—simply by visiting a target’s social media profile or website from an improperly secured device. This course pulls back the curtain on how the internet tracks users, demonstrating specifically how IP addresses, browser fingerprints, and device metadata can lead a target straight back to the police station. Students will leave with a deployable checklist of tools and "digital hygiene" practices to conduct online reconnaissance and undercover operations without leaving a trace.
Learning Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Define operational security (OPSEC) and its relevance to digital investigations.
- Explain how IP addresses function and how they can reveal sensitive information.
- Identify common OPSEC failures and how they impact law enforcement investigations.
- Demonstrate knowledge of protective tools such as VPNs, proxies.
- Apply digital risk mitigation strategies during covert or online operations.
